Briefing with Chemi Peres
Our programme for this year of Israel’s 70th anniversary began on 17th January with a private breakfast and briefing in central London with Chemi Peres – son of the late President Shimon Peres – who was, of course, one of the towering figures of the 20th century.
Chemi set out his late father’s philosophy and record which is now captured in his father’s book – finished weeks before his death as ‘No Room for Small Dreams: Courage, Imagination, and the Making of Modern Israel‘.
The audience of thirty UK Israel Business members made up of senior figures from the investment community had the chance to listen to Chemi talk about the guiding principles of his late father in what makes a great leader, and how to make hard choices in a climate of uncertainty. Chemi also talked about his father’s great interest in the power of the human brain and man’s ability to overcome some of our most intractable problems. The late President Peres had been crucial in the creation of Israel’s status as the start-up nation.
Chemi and his colleague Ran Simha, General Partner, of their VC fund, New Era Capital Partners, set out the fund’s strategy, and how it seeks to achieve a ‘double bottom line’. Chemi spoke of the speed of globalisation and the need to ensure that we all understand the implications of what this game-changing process means for those left behind by change or cannot see a way in which they benefit. Chemi also spoke of the need to maintain moral values and a global positive human impact on business. UKIB members then joined in a discussion and questions.
